Müze, Ankara Kalesi’nin eteklerinde bulunan Osmanlı döneminden kalma Mahmut Paşa Bedesteni ve Kurşunlu Han içerisinde yer almaktadır.1921 yılında Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’ün talimatıyla kurulan bu müze, zamanla Türkiye’nin en önemli arkeoloji müzelerinden biri haline gelmiştir.
Müzede Hititler, Urartular, Frigler, Lidyalılar ve daha birçok medeniyete ait eserler sergilenmektedir.Dünya'nın en eski haritalarından biri olan Çatalhöyük haritası da burada bulunmaktadır.
